This year for youth conference our stake decided to combine with other faiths in our area,
and create a cardboard city. It was to make the kids aware of homeless in the area and see
how they live and what their needs really are. This was way different then what I remember
how they live and what their needs really are. This was way different then what I remember
youth conference to be, but it was something my girls were willing to do and make it fun.
Each youth was to decorate their own box that they would sleep in. The majority of the kids
just showed up with a box not decorated, which was NO FUN and at the same time brilliant.
We could have saved so much time and saved our grass the girls painted and even part of the
driveway and sidewalk that got speckled with paint. However, I am glad they put some
effort into painting their boxes because I think it got them in the mood to go and have fun.

Of course they had activities that night and they all slept in their boxes at the park.
For dinner they went through a soup line which they all said was gross, but I bet if they
were really homeless and hungry they would have loved it.
The next night they had classes and a dance, because what is a youth conference without a dance.
Sunday night was the fireside and dinner.
Youth Conferences are not all the same. Some are super duper fun stuff and others are more
of a learning experience. It is what you make of it. I believe you can have fun doing
anything, and even if it's sleeping in a park in a cardboard box you can have fun.
