The Northridge earthquake happened 17 years ago. I remember some
things so well and other things people mention I don't remember as much.
I do remember and was so glad that Thayne just happened to be home. I was
so glad because he traveled alot so him being home was so nice.
I remember TJ sleeping upstairs so we had to get him. He was safe and sound.
Our 60 gallon fish tank broke and we had water and glass everywhere.
Furniture was tipped and broke. I don't think one dish or glass was still in the
cupboards. They were all on the floor with alot of food.
We got dressed and grabbed a gallon of milk out of the fridge, a few baby bottles and
we headed out the door to Thayne's parents house. We had no diapers because we stored
them under the fish tank cupboard. Halfway to my in laws I realized I couldn't see, no contacts
in my eyes and didn't grab glasses (one reason I got lasik) so I had a hard time seeing.
It was just a crazy day. Men running around turning gas off at every one's homes. Cracks
in the streets. No electricity for a long time.
I won't go into everything that day. I would like to see if my in laws got any pictures from
the day of the earthquake, I didn't get any. I know we have some video somewhere.
I just know I am so glad that is in the past. It makes me a little nervous to think about it
and know we are moving back to California soon, but it doesn't scare me.
The best memory of the day was my sister gave birth to her first child 17 years ago today.
Now I'm just saying if it were me, and I had my first kid during an earthquake with no water,
no drugs, and no electricity I would not have thought having 5 more kids was a good idea.
I'm glad she did because they are all great kids, but I think she's nuts.
Happy 17th Birthday Jake! I will never forget the day you were born.
You would think after all of that I would be a little better with my
food storage but I am not. One of my goals when I get back
to California. Be prepared!
